Do You Understand?
» The new rules regarding the Affordable Care Act (ACA) — also known as Obamacare?
» When you will benefit from shopping for coverage on MNsure?
» How to determine if you’ll qualify for a subsidy or help with paying your premiums?
At RiverStone Insurance, we have independent agents that can answer all of your questions and assist you with making the MNsure process easier. We are able to assist you with purchasing a plan direct from a health insurance carrier or through the MNsure Exchange, if it is beneficial for you to do so.
Eligibility
The Annual Enrollment dates for coverage in 2025 are November 1, 2024 — January 15, 2025.
Be careful though, during the Annual Enrollment Period to get an effective date for the 1st of any month you need to apply by the 15th of the month. For example, apply by December 15th in order to get coverage effective January 1st. It is also important to know that you only get one chance to pick a plan for the upcoming year.
There are other times to enroll throughout the year based on a “Qualifying Event.” This is called a Special Enrollment Period. Some of these events include:
» Marriage, divorce
» Gain of a dependent through birth of a child, adoption, foster care or a child support order
» Loss of minimum essential coverage (i.e., loss of Medical Assistance or MinnesotaCare or employer-sponsored coverage ends because a job is ending) This does not include loss of coverage due to failure to pay premiums on time, including COBRA premiums
» Loss of affordable employer-sponsored coverage or your coverage does not meet the minimum value requirements.
» Determination that an individual is newly eligible or ineligible for premium tax credits or a change in eligibility for cost-sharing reductions
» Permanent address move which provides new qualified health plan enrollment options
» Other exceptional circumstances identified by MNSure
Plan Options
We work with multiple carriers and can show you options based on your individual situation. Items we will discuss with you may include:
» Am I eligible to enroll?
» How much will I pay in premium?
» Will I qualify for a premium subsidy?
» Is my provider “in-network?”
» Will my prescription drugs be covered?
» How much will my copayments, coinsurance and deductible be?
» Can I start or continue using a Health Savings Account (HSA)?
Do You Qualify for a Subsidy?
Subsidies (that pay a portion of your premium) are based on income, family size and where you live. In order to qualify for a subsidy, you must purchase coverage through the MNsure Exchange. You may also be entitled to a subsidy if your employer does not offer affordable coverage and you have income under 400% of the Federal Poverty Rate. All of our agents are MNSure certified and can assist you through this process.
Short Term Plans
Affordable short term temporary policies are available with Minnesota’s most recognized carriers. These plans can help bridge a gap between employer health insurance plans or if you simply need to get a few months of coverage before the next Annual Election Period. They have 30, 60 or 90 day plan options. It is important to note that these plans do not meet the ACA requirement for health insurance plans, do not offer preventative coverage or cover pre-existing conditions.
